Category: Dr. Farhat Hashmi

Her Biography:

Dr. Farhat Hashmi is an Islamic scholar from Pakistan, with a masters degree in Arabic and a PhD in Islamic Studies. She was formerly a lecturer and assistant professor at the Faculty of Usul-al-Din at International Islamic University, Islamabad. She taught at the International Islamic University Islamabad, while also conducting informal religious study circles for women in Islamabad.

She resigned from her post at the university to pursue her mission of establishing a center of Islamic learning, particularly catering to women. Al-Huda International is a chain of centers that cater towards the promotion of Qur’anic knowledge for the common women.

Founder of Al-Huda International:

Dr. Hashmi established the first center of her institution “Al-Huda International” in a building in downtown Islamabad. Since then, Al-Huda centers have been established in Pakistan, USA and Canada to impart the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Besides regular courses, the centers conduct special workshops which are open to the general public. Many women manage the different centers all over the world. Women scholars at her institution also conduct lectures and workshops in English, however the primary medium remains Urdu.

Hashmi herself lectures in some of these sessions, particularly during the month of Ramadan. Many of her lectures are recorded and disseminated throughout Pakistan, the Middle East, as well as the US and UK.

Her Views

Dr. Hashmi considers Taqlid in regards to Islamic jurisprudence to be permitted for those, who have no other choice, but discourages the blind taqlid that shuns the verses of the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the prophet, the sayings of the companions and the taqlid that prevents people from searching for evidence.

Lord of the Worlds, Allah Subhana wa ta’ala obligates on every Muslim:

[gn_quote]Prayer (Salaah) at fixed hours has been enjoined upon the believers. (Surah an-Nisa’ 103)[/gn_quote]

Hence not only praying is obligatory but praying at it’s own time is obligatory on every Muslim, with exceptions given for certain situations as mentioned in other ahadeeth.

The importance of Salah (Prayer) can be seen from the fact that when in the night of Isra-wal-Mi’raj, Rasoolullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was ascended to Allah (subuhaanahu wata’aala), Salah is the only act of Ibadah which was revealed directly, without any messenger in between. Why? Because it is so special and it is the one which is most beloved in the sight of Allah (subuhaanahu wata’aala) and leaving it is no excuse.

Allah (subuhaanahu wata’aala) says in Surah al-Baqarah, Verse Number 238,

[gn_quote]Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind). [/gn_quote] Most ‘Ulema are of strong opinion that the Middle Prayer referred here by Allah SWT is ‘Asr Prayer.

Let us ponder on the last words of Rasoolullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). In his last breaths, he said, “As-Salaah! As-Salaah!………” (Narrated by Imam Ahmed). Meaning that “be careful to Prayers”.

The first question which will be asked on the Day of Judgement will be about Salah. If it is good, everything else will be good, and if it is bad, then everything else will be bad too.

Rasoolullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, [gn_quote]The first thing that the servant will be called to account for on the Day of Judgment will be Salah. If it is good, his deeds will have been good. If it is bad, his deeds will have been bad.[/gn_quote] (At-Tabarani)

Imam Ahlusunnah Wa’al Jamaa’ Ahmed Bin Hanbal Rahimullah once said “A person’s relationship with his Salah reflects his relationship with his Deen (of Islam)“.[gn_divider]

Parents hold enormous leverage in terms of what they teach their children and accordingly how their children grow up as adults. Islam, therefore, hold parents responsible for steering their children’s upbringing according to the guidelines of the Quran and the Prophet’s (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) traditions. The Prophet (s) said: [gn_quote]Allah (SWT) will ask every caretaker about the people under his care, and the man will be asked about the people of his household. (Nasa’i, Abu Da’ud).  [/gn_quote]

Allah (SWT) states in the Quran about the need to raise families in the light of their end destination, which may be translated in the following words:

[gn_quote]O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded. (Tahrim 66:6).  [/gn_quote]

Children have the right, therefore, to be raised as responsible Muslim adults and parents must ensure that right appropriately. Parents must be conscious and take an active role in guiding their children and families on the path of truth. The Prophet Muhammad (s) said:  [gn_quote]Every one of your (people) is responsible, and everyone is responsible for whatever falls under his responsibility. A man is like a shepherd of his own family, and he is responsible for them. (Bukhari and Muslim). [/gn_quote][gn_divider]
