How to Understand the Quran (classical)

    Author: Sheikh Muhammad Jameel Zeeno

Translated by: Abu Taher Ibn Muhammad ‘Abdul Haque

    About the Book:

This is an abridgment of the treatise written by Shaykh Jameel Zeeno which provides every Muslim with essential knowledge regarding the correct way to understand the Qur’an. This should be the goal of every Muslim since the Qur’an is the Message sent by Allaah and the pillar of guidance He has given them. Only by correct understanding of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah can one feel that they have traversed the path of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alehe Wasallam) the best of creation and hope to attain the great reward Allaah has prepared for the Believers. This topic, should not escape any Muslim let alone anyone ascribing themselves to the Sunnah. We know that in the etiquette’s of learning one begins by learning from the Qur’an, then that which follows from it. This is plainly clear in the biographies of the pious scholars, many of whom memorized the Qur’an in the early days of their youth.

An Explanation of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah’s Introduction to the Principles of Tafsir

By Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaymin

    About the Book

The Quran is the greatest miracle for mankind, yet how many of us truly understand its beautiful message and the sciences that surround it?

This book is one of the many written on this topic. In it, the renowned author Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah outlines the principles employed by the scholars in understanding the verses of the Qur’an.

What makes this book unique is the fact that it is combined with Shaykh Ibn Uthayman’s detailed explanation of the original text.

So, the reader benefits from both the original work and the detailed explanation of the work, all in an easy to follow, smooth, accessible format.

    About the Author

Shaykh al-Islam Taqi ud-Din Abu’l-Abbas Ahmad Ibn al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam Ibn Taymiyah al-Hanbali was born in , 661 AH (1263 AC) in Haran, which is now in Eastern Turkey, near the border of northern Iraq.

His family had long been renowned for its learning , among his teachers, was Shams ud-Din Al-Maqdisi, first Hanbali Chief Justice of Syria following the reform of the judiciary by Baibars. The number of Ibn Taimiyah’s teachers exceeds two hundred. Ibn Taimiyah was barely seventeen, when Qadi Al-Maqdisi authorized him to issue Fatwa (legal verdict). Qadi remembered with pride that it was he who had first permitted an intelligent and learned man like Ibn Taimiyah to give Fatwa.

At the same age, he started delivering lectures. When he was thirty, he was offered the office of Chief Justice, but refused, as he could not persuade himself to follow the limitations imposed by the authorities.
Imam Ibn Taimiyah’s education was essentially that of a Hanbali theologian and jurisconsult. But to his knowledge of early and classical Hanbalism, he added not only that of the other schools of jurisprudence but also that of other literature.

He had an extensive knowledge of Quran, Sunnah, Greek philosophy, Islamic history, and religious books of others, as is evident from the variety of the books he wrote.

  • The Day Of Resurrection in the Light of Surah Al-Naba’

The Day Of Resurrection in the Light of Surah Al-Naba’

    [captionpix imgsrc=”http://www.hasbunallaah.com/wp-content/uploads/surah-an-naba-day-of-resurr344.jpg” theme=”chain” width=”250″ align=”center”]

    Compiled by: Shawana A. Aziz

Belief in the Day of Resurrection gives meaning and purpose to our brief stay in this transient world. It is the believer’s goal to win the Pleasure of His Lord by worshiping Him alone, fulfilling His Commands and refraining from His Prohibition during his worldly life-span. On the Day of Judgment, his fate will be decided in accordance with his record of deeds; he who fulfills his obligations will be rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise, and he, who fails to be a believer will be doomed to eternal Hell-Fire.

Those who reject the idea of being brought back to life are unable to understand the reality of this life and are ever confused about what lies beyond death. In their bewilderment, they concoct mysterious stories about what, if anything, happens to the soul after death.

Those who reject resurrection also cannot explain why certain things happen like, birth and death, why some people suffer while others commit the most heinous crimes against humanity and go unpunished?

Such uncertainty in belief causes misery in life. Self-indulgence overwhelms man and he races against time to achieve physical pleasures – by hook or by crook – for fear that his time will come to an end before he can enjoy life’s pleasures. Destructive behavior and immoral attitudes take the lead because disbelief in resurrection makes following any moral principle worthless. Man becomes inconsiderate of his fellow men. Consequently, the whole society suffers from chaos, greed, transgressions and intolerance.

On the other hand, a believer in resurrection focuses on his ultimate goal and does not let trivial pleasures of the world distract him. He is always satisfied with little provision and his soul is free from cravings and greed because he knows that what is in store for him in the Hereafter is much more than this world can offer. The Prophet (sallallahu aaihe wa-sallam) said, “The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.” [Saheeh Muslim]

A believer’s certainty of faith provides him with all the answers he needs to live a serene life; he understands the purpose of life and death, struggle and trial.

He is solicitous in his attitude and behavior with others and refrains from any sort of transgression. It does not upset him if he does not receive his due in this world or is treated unjustly because he is well-aware that this world is not the final place for judgment, rewards and punishments. He is certain that the time will come for all matters to be settled justly and that time is the Day of Judgement. Reckoning thus brings comfort and solace to the heart of a believer, and peace and tranquility to society as a whole.

The author Compiles from Arabic work the Tafseer of this Surah which was revealed in response to the Arab pagan’s denial of the Day of Resurrection and contains proofs of Allah’s Ability to resurrect His creation, proofs we witness in our day to day lives!

Soorah an-Naba describes how this great event will take place and how the ambiance of the earth will quickly change into an atmosphere that will cause terror in the hearts of the people. The Soorah depicts the evil abode of the disbelievers and their crimes. It also illustrates the rewards and blessings the believers will receive from their Lord on the Day of Judgment. It further describes the great events of that Day; the intercessions, reckoning and weighing of the deeds in the balance. The Soorah contains admonitions and glad tidings for those who take heed.

With the intent of making the Tafseer of this Surah comprehensively beneficial for the reader, various famous Arabic Tafaseer (pl. of Tafseer) and original Arabic books about the subject were referred to.

From amongst them are: Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-Adheem of Shaikh Salih al-Uthaimeen, Adwaul-Bayan of Imam Shanqitee, Tafseer Ibn Katheer of Hafidh Ibn Katheer, Fathul-Baree, Jamee al-Uloom wal-Hikam and Sharh Muslim by an-Nawawi, Sharah Usool al-Imaan of Shaikh Salih al-Uthaimeen, Al-Eeman bil-Malaaikah wa-Athruhu fi-Hayatil-Ummah and Aqeedah at-Tawheed by Shaikh Salih ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan and others.

    Author: Jamaal Al-Din M. Zarabozo

In this book, the author has attempted to bridge the gap between Muslims and the Quran. The author writes about what the Quran is and what is a Muslim’s responsibility toward it. He also studies the effect that the Quran had upon the first generation of Muslims and attempts to answer why the Quran does not seem to have the same miraculous effect today.

The book discusses how many Muslims currently approach the Quran. Then it goes on to discuss the how the Quran should be approached and the main teachings of the Quran. The work also offers a lengthy discussion of the proper sources of tafseer or Quranic commentary.

One reviewer wrote about this work:

    [gn_quote]

It will be useful reading for all Muslims, new converts and those who have been practicing for years. As I was reading, I found passages that built such a powerful crescendo of argumentation and commentary, that I was deeply touched.

Prepared and Translated by: Abu Rumaysah

The Spiritual Cure is an explanation to Surah Al Fatihah, a summary of numerous classical commentaries of The Quran. The underlying theme of Surah al-fatihah is one of contemplation and serenity, pondering the Names and Attributes of Allah, pondering the creation and acknowledging that He alone deserves praise and worship, that He alone should be asked/sought for help, that He alone should be feared and hoped in that He alone should be invoked that there is indeed a Day of Judgement and that guidance has come to us and we are required to be firm and consistent on it by the Towfiq of Allah.

It calls us to carefully scrutinize our relationship with our Lord, that is, are we living according to the declaration and our covenant with our Lord that ‘none has the right to be worshipped but Allah’ or not? This opening chapter, despite its brevity, calls man to fulfil the rights of Tawheed, the right that Allah has over us to worship Him alone without any partners, in thirty places. This chapter summarises succinctly the message of the whole Quran.

The Quran and the Orientalists – An Examination Of Their Main theories and Assumptions

    Author: Muhammad Mohar Ali

The present work gives in a compact and integrated form the main orientalist assumptions and theories about the Qur’an and examines them critically. The treatment is not what some of the orientalists are prone to call “apologetic”. The Author has met them on their own grounds and have taken up their arguments and statements one by one, pointing out their faults, inconsistencies and untenability, dealing with each and every one and examining them with the facts and logic. It has been demonstrated how and where they have erred and drawn wrong conclusions. It has also been shown that in advancing their theories and assumptions they have in almost all cases distorted and misinterpreted the texts and the facts, often resorting to biased shaping of the latter and a good deal of arbitrary assumptions and surmises. The treatment is clear, concise, to the point, logical, and effective.

The Qur’an and the Orientalists takes in to account the views and assumptions advanced about the Qur’an by the dozens of the orientalists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries like William Muir, Theodor Noldeke, David Margoliouth, Arthur Jeffery, Richard Bell, Montgomery Watt, and others. These views are analyzed and discussed in three broad parts.

In the first part are discussed those that constitute a direct allegation of the Prophet’s authorship of the Qur’an, particularly, his alleged borrowing from Judaeo-Christian sources, the question of his literacy and the alleged environmental influence on him in general.

In the second part are dealt with those that revolve around the question of the Qur’anic wahy (revelation) and are aimed at showing that the Qur’anic revelation proceeded in some form or other from the mind and personality of the Prophet, thus supplementing the allegation of his authorship.

In the third part it is discussed those that relate to the history and text of the Qur’an, particularly Noldeke’s theory about the history of the text of the Qur’an, Arthur Jeffery’s “Materials” for the history of the text of the Qur’an, the Bell-Watt theory of revision of the text of the Qur’an, the fiction of the foreign vocabulary of the Qur’an, J.A. Bellamy’s supposed copyist’s errors and proposed emendations of the Qur’an and the like, together with a survey of the orientalists’ translations of the Qur’an.

    Author: Mahmood al-Misri (Abu `Ammaar)

    Translator: Farhiya Yahya

This book is an English translation of the Original Arabic book ‘Al-asbab al-Mueena Alal Hifdh’ in which the author has emphasized on the virtues of memorizing and understanding the Qur’an along with the causes that aid to achieve it.

    Word from the Author

There is no honour for this Ummah except in holding firmly to the Book of its Lord ‘azza wa jall, and the day that it goes beyond the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah, trying to seek honour in other than them – then will Allaah disgrace it and lower it to the lowest of nations, and this humiliation we see today is only due to what our hands have earned… but indeed Allaah pardons much.

O Youth of the Sahwah (Awakening), go towards to the pure spring… to the Book of Allaah `azza wa jall and embark upon its memorization, its studies and act upon it – so that Allaah swt may raise your rank in this Dunya and in the Aakhira, so that He may lift the hardships from this Ummah and so that His victory may descend upon his servants, al-Muwahhideen (who uphold the Tawheed of Allaah).
